Painting Across the Atlantic

Regina Rex, New York

23 October – 4 December 2016

Gouache, acrylic and vinyl  paint on wood panels and canvas, 2015 – 2016

Evening. Setting sail on the Atlantic. The course was to follow the Norse route via the Shetlands, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland. Small panels were prepared with plaster ground and stowed in a travel case doubling as easel. A sailboat is a studio without a fixed position. Time rocks back and forth. The panels accrue the rise and fall, recording a coming about. Waves fall into waves, clouds move forward, birds fly down, curved lines and circles. Pink blue violet white yellow, sometimes silver. Icebergs crack, sizzle and pass away in the night.

Morning. Harborside, Regina Rex. These placeless paintings leave the theater of the sea to become paintings in a painted landscape. Stuck on an island. Diminutive, rough-hewn and elusive they float on buoyant after images. Wood on canvas. Waves fall into waves, clouds move forward, birds fly down, curved lines and circles. Pink blue violet white yellow, sometimes silver. Scale, color, texture and form. A call and response in harmony and dissonance. Here isn't there, there isn't here.
